Who Is CLCC
Homeless statistics issued by One Roof in November 2010 show that in Greater Metropolitan Birmingham and Central Alabama, there are currently 2, 273 homeless persons. Over 1,500, or 68%, of those homeless are men and 29% are chronically homeless. Men average longer lengths of homelessness and generally report needing additional services. With the current economic downturn, homelessness is becoming a more prevalent problem. As a society, we must look for more creative approaches to addressing chronic homelessness.
In January of 2007, Ken Sanford, a Birmingham businessman, led his bible study group to envision a center to help Birmingham’s homeless men get back on their feet. After three years of research, visioning, community appeals and fundraising, this local men’s group is now witnessing the fruits of their labor. Since September 2010, Changed Lives Christian Center is now a reality and is indeed changing lives!
Changed Lives Christian Center (CLCC) is a faith based ministry that offers transitional housing for men who are on their way to recover from homelessness, whether from the economic recession or other personal issues. CLCC aims to do more than manage the homeless by feeding and sheltering them overnight or for a short time. The mission of Changed Lives is to take human beings who are presently homeless and weave them back into the fabric of productive society. The center currently houses men for up to two years, providing a mailing address, getting Social Security cards and/or drivers licenses if needed, offering medical and dental care, teaching life skills and helping them find jobs. Residents have savings accounts, learn personal financial management and pay monthly rent to live at CLCC.
Changed Lives Christian Center is an outgrowth of THE NEST, a ministry that has been working with homeless people living on the streets and under the interstates for several years. Changed Lives Christian Center has been endorsed by the City of Birmingham, Operation New Birmingham and numerous community and neighborhood associations. CLCC will play a huge role in meeting the goals of Birmingham’s 10-year Plan to Prevent and End Chronic Homelessness. Those involved with this ministry anticipate a significant positive impact in decreasing chronic homelessness in Birmingham.
