Changed Lives Medical Clinic

Changed Lives Medical Clinic shows the love of Jesus Christ by providing medical care to people who otherwise would not be able to receive such care.  It is offered every 4th Tuesday night from 6-8pm under a viaduct in downtown Birmingham.  The clinic distributes over the counter medicine along with antibiotics, blood pressure medicines, ointments, and many other things that our patients need for their medical care.  Patients receive one month supply of the medicines that they need at no cost to them and are required to return each month for refills.  We provide eye tests, reading glasses and toiletries when available.  We also provide a hot meal for everyone who attends.

Changed Lives Medical Clinic started in 2004 (then called The NEST Medical Clinic) when God laid it on the heart of Registered Nurse, Cindy Underwood that as a nurse she could do more than just feed the homeless.  It started with just Cindy and a few over the counter things like Tylenol, vitamins, Band-Aids, ibuprophen, etc. As Cindy began to talk about the clinic with others, they began to get involved.  With God's blessings, the number of volunteers and patients started to grow.  The clinic averages 100 patients during the two hours per month that we meet to care for the public. The medical clinic serves as the primary medical care for many of our patients.

Everything we use is donated, except medicines which must be purchased with donated funds. Because of our volunteers, the clinic is able to meet almost any minor medical need. Volunteers include doctors and nurses, volunteers who check blood sugar, help with wound care and do eye screenings. In addition to providing medicine and basic medical care, we provide basic toiletries needed items such as dry socks to fight and treat athletes' foot.

Our Inspiration: If you give yourself to the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then your light will rise in darkness and your gloom will become like midday. -Isaiah 58:10

A Message from Our Medical Director, Dr. Marc E. Bloomston

As the Medical Director of Changed Lives Medical Clinic, Dr. Marc E. Bloomston has found his way to give back and hopefully make a difference in the lives of the neediest patients.   “It is important to me that when one encounters an opportunity to help others, by doing so one can begin to heal the world,” said Dr. Bloomston.   "Cindy Underwood, R.N. and many Birmingham physicians, nurses, and others comprise a volunteer staff that makes up a medical clinic under a viaduct in downtown Birmingham. We serve all comers once a month, and treat a variety of medical needs including acute respiratory illnesses, wound management, hypertension, blood sugar checks, and answering questions related to their health. Every clinic there is always one thing that impresses me the most and that is the tremendous need that exists in our homeless population. It is an honor to be a part of this wonderful organization.”
